  25. Well, I can't comment on the Zoom modem. I have a Zoom 14.4 modem in
  26. another computer and have had no problems in over a year.

  28. Reveal, however, is another story. Unfortunately, I made a big mistake
  29. and purchased a Packard-Bell computer for home use. Of course, since
  30. they're known for a high quality product, the sound card died within 3
  31. months, taking the modem with it. I needed a 28.8 modem and the nice
  32. man at Sears talked me into purchasing a Reveal 28.8 modem. Within a
  33. week, I discovered that the major stockholder in Packard-Bell is also
  34. the major player in Reveal. Yep, same quality.

  36. First, I found that their own suggested modem initialization string
  37. causes the modem to report ERROR...not a good first sign. Of course,
  38. we go downhill from there. Let's see...how about inordinately long
  39. times to complete a handshake? How about not connecting on the first
  40. attempt? How about 2 months later it gets worse? Sometimes 3 and 4
  41. attempts to connect to a system that is not busy.

  43. Bottom line...if you're looking for a modem with incredibly poor
  44. quality from a company owned by an individual who apparently prides
  45. himself on the worst possible quality, then you need to run down and
  46. buy one of these truly awful products. Of course, this is my own
  47. personal opinion as the owner of a Packard-Bell computer and a Reveal
  48. 28.8 modem.

  50. BTW, it took me 7 tries this evening to connect to a non-busy system.
